Underline- Joel Mamboka

Underline- Joel Mamboka

Last weekend, winemaker Tuanni Price hosted Joel Mamboka in a compelling artist talk that gave us a glimpse into his creative journey and current explorations.

Joel began by sharing how his artistic eye first found expression not on canvas, but in the kitchen. While working under a head chef, his intuitive plating caught attention—an early sign that art was his true calling. “By fire, by force,” Joel reflected, painting became inevitable. Nearly a decade later, his work continues to evolve, with his recent series delving into the vibrant culture of La Sape.

The conversation turned thought-provoking when an audience member noted Joel’s striking red lips, drawing a connection to how, during the Jim Crow era, lips were exaggerated and caricatured in harmful ways. Joel responded thoughtfully, acknowledging the near-universal threads in the Black experience across cultures. He spoke of reclaiming beauty in African people—transforming what was once weaponized into a powerful statement of identity.

When asked about his future, Joel was deliberate: “I think only about the present, and the near future.” Grounded in the moment, he remains focused on the evolving story unfolding now.

We left the evening with fresh perspectives—on art, history, and resilience—carrying the warmth of the room long after the last glass was poured.
