Collection: Joël Mamboka

Joël Mamboka Nkumu, born in 1990 in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, is a contemporary artist currently residing in Cape Town, South Africa. His artistic journey began at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kinshasa, where he was influenced by prominent artists such as Matemo and Achille Katembo. Mamboka’s work uniquely blends abstract and impressionistic styles, celebrating everyday heroes within African society, particularly the ‘sapeurs', flamboyant Congolese dandies. Utilising various media, including paint and fabric, Mamboka’s mixed media pieces resonate deeply with viewers and reflect his Congolese heritage. His work often addresses socio-political themes and advocates for values such as work ethic and responsibility. Through vibrant colours and intricate details, Mamboka continues to explore the complexities of human experience and cultural narratives, making a significant impact on the art community.
Since his first major exhibition at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) in 2019, Mamboka has participated in numerous group exhibitions and held two solo shows at Youngblood Gallery. His art has been showcased internationally, including in venues such as The Black Art House in the U.S., Bobu Africa Gallery in Kenya, and This Is Not a White Cube in Lisbon.
